Is the Movie Theatre experience in America a dying pasttime?

Sure you have new "mega" theatres that serve restaurant grade appetizers and beers, but last years box office tanked drastically. Add the factors of horrible movie going experiences due to a younger, ruder, ethics-free generation of moronic wannabe gangbangers who drive away families by talking on their cell phones and too each other through the whole picture (see; "The Language of Primates" - National Geographic) and the proliferation of cheaper, higher grade home theatre systems. Do you think this American tradition is in jeopardy?

PS - granted, Im being sarcastic about the punk-jerks who ruin the movie experience, but who hasn't encountered a pack of grammatically challenged teens with their baggy pants hanging half way down, wearing fur collared parkas and wolverine work boots...in the summer...who blare their totally inane lifestories for all to hear into their free cellphones from Boost Mobile???

Is the Movie Theatre experience in America a dying pasttime?
Hell yes, I can't remember the last time I went to the movies without someone answering there ringing cell phone and chatting it up for half the movie and don't get me started on the people who seem to show up just so they can fall asleep and snore through the entire movie. As far as talking too each other during the movie I think I've just gotten used to it at the last couple of movies I went to it was like trying to watch a movie in a middle school cafeteria on nacho day I am not kidding people don't even bother to whisper anymore. The funny thing is I rarely see teens at the movies I go to all the bad experiences I have had have been with adults. Oh! except the last movie I went to a family was sitting behind me parents talking loudly kids yelling asking stupid questions the parents ignore you know, the usual, when all of a sudden I here a splashing noise. I think that someone behind me dropped there soda no biggie but no, I am not that lucky I over hear the words, oh no and vomit yes, one of the kids barfed on the floor. I was watching "Eight Below" so I couldn't blame the kid for barfing but the worst part was the parents did not tell the theater staff what happened they just walked out without saying a word. So I say bring on the cheaper, higher grade home theater systems!
Reply:I would disagree with your statement about "a pack of grammatically challenged teens" being the only ones talking during a movie. In fact, it's usually not the teenagers that do the talking... though I admit that I don't go to teen movies all that often.

I think that the price hikes and string of failing "Blockbuster" movies should be a wake up call to the studio executives who still seem to think that big is better. It's not. It's just more expensive.

There are still certain movies that I will go watch in the theater, especially for social occasions (I hardly ever go to the movies by myself), but I also use the phrase, "Oh, that's a definite renter." I've become more discriminating in the movies that I see in the theater.
Reply:I still go to the movies pretty regularly. If I have to tell someone to be quite I will. I think the box office drop may have been due to the quality of the pictures that were out last year.
Reply:I am telling on myself (age wise) but I remember when it cost 25 to go to the movies on Saturday, and popcorn was a dime. There isn't even a cent key icon on the keyboard! The

theatres were huge, palaces really (in Chicago) with the most elaborate interiors, statues, pillars and marble stair-cases leading up to the balcony floor. Seats were covered with velvet..so ornate, so plush, so elaborate. So long ago

and never to be seen again except the few that are restored.

Once in awhile I will go see a movie with a friend, even tho

it cost too much...nothing will ever replace the feeling of

sitting in the dark, looking up at a large screen in front of you and enjoying the movie at the theater. It's a shame. (I am 48)
Reply:What has happened is a lot of Stars are getting Boycotted for their Political statements so thus the Movies get Boycotted as well.
Reply:Ok, I'm 18--but even I have to agree with the quality of movie-goers you're referring to. I remember when I was smaller, my family and I would make a day out of it, and it was something fun. Now, with prices rising on EVERYTHING, the quality of movies declining, and the originality of the movie-experience becoming less appealing, most people would benefit from waiting for it to come out on DVD. Oh--and let's face it--now you only have to wait 3-5 months for THAT! But yes, a part of me still DOES like going to the movies, and a part of me always will. But I liked it before all the high-tech, over-rated, remake propelled theaters popped up everywhere.
Reply:no ...i dont think so
